A map of central Winchester with no labels but one pin at the location of ClueCapers and the words 'X Marks the Spot'

Have you found where X marks the spot?

ClueCapers Armchair Treasure Hunt Entry Form

Still searching for an X?

It's OK to take a little hint....

Unlike in an escape room, outside knowledge is required for these puzzles and we expect everyone to need to use the internet to find this ‘treasure’.

When searching, adding ‘Winchester’ to search strings will often but not always help.

Here are some little ‘nudges in the right direction’ if you’re getting a little stuck…..

Clue: Where X angels are taken to perform

You seek a performance space where 10 Angels will be performing this March. Look for What’s On and/or for archives of production photos. This was the location of ClueCapers’ first public event as part of (now renamed) Play to the Crowd’s Woolly Hat Fair 2015.

Clue: Where we find a ZZZ and a YYY and someone shakes her 'foot'

The images refer to two special stones that sit one above the other; one is named the same as a person who wears trainers.

Clue: Where there's room for 10X10 hungry men

A modest bit of maths is required here to find somewhere serving cups of tea. This is a place we’ve enjoyed exploring this last year or so!

Clue: Blue framed image

What do you see?

If the halo does not belong to an angel, what kind of person might it refer to? And where in our great outdoors might we remember their tale?

Clue: Where QQQ sits at 10 o'clock

Those symbols definitely appear somewhere else on the page but what we need is a key. Check the marginalia carefully!

Clue: Handy Beery Badge

Well this is a mixed up clue!  But it seems you’re looking for three words with 4,5 and 6 letters respectively.

The place you seek marks a royal burial site beautifully commemorated with etched glass.

For non-locals it may help to know that this place far pre-dates author R.L.S’s villain (4 letters) of the same name. (Young people: RLS is not R.L.Stein, sorry)

Clue: The 'Purple Dial' puzzle - getting started

The clues here are in three groups of three… to give you a two-word moniker and another useful word.

- clue: The 'Purple Dial' puzzle - bird third

Where in the world could you find this road, geographic feature and emblematic red-chested bird on apple blossom? This is the first half of a certain individual’s nickname.

- clue: The 'Purple Dial' puzzle - Cyclops third

What do these three characters have in common? This is the second half of the nickname you seek.

- clue: The 'Purple dial' puzzle - * third

What architectural form unites these three?

- clue: The 'Purple dial' puzzle - combining the thirds

If you have your two word nickname and another useful word from their respective thirds of the dial but can’t find the link… try adding Winchester to the search string; the New York Almanack has a handy summary of this curious tale.

Clue: The eighth X, in among the words

The different coloured letters along the margins give you What 3 Words?

The Final Clue: How do we get one location from eight Xs?

When you have all eight locations we recommend you use the Google My Maps feature where you can add the google pins for the eight locations to your own map of Winchester and draw lines between them to find the point of intersection. The eight places form a rough circle and lines drawn from each to the one opposite produces one point of intersection (within just a few metres  (which we think is slightly spooky!))…. it looks a little like two crosses overlaid.

(The order of the colours of crosses under the question ‘How many Xs at X?’ has no significance apart from indicating that you will need all 8 locations.)

To finish you could visit the location in person – or use the magic of StreetView! How many Xs do you see now?

(For real clever-clogses: we are accepting a few different answers – because – but feel free to debate which is the most right answer!)
